How We Organized Our LEGO

* This post contains both my Amazon and Target affiliate links. If you purchase Sterilite containers or anything after clicking my links I may receive a commission.

If you've been reading this blog or my old Brick Star blog from my LEGO days, you will know that we are a LEGO family. Long before our son turned 3 he started to play with "big boy" LEGO and with our help he has amassed his own collection. This past weekend, he finally graduated from his miscellaneous bins and hand me down drawers and moved into his own organized LEGO Model Shop.

Hubby purchased a few different sizes of plastic Sterilite Drawer containers in various sizes and arranged them to sit in front of an unused fire place in our playroom. (We live in California and have a baby and a toddler!)

The Sterilite Drawers are great because they are clear, modular, stackable, and the drawers slide in and out easily. I know there are others on the market but I like the sizes of these especially the 3 Drawer Mini and 3 Drawer Wide. The others are 5 Drawer units in two different sizes that worked perfecty for us. We got ours at Walmart, but you can also get them on Amazon and Target.com

He sorted the LEGO into logical types, 2x bricks, 1x bricks, 1x plates, 2x plates, clips, minifigures, tiles, slopes, inverted slopes, rounds, 1x plates, 2x plates, clips, wheels, etc. but you can basically separate whatever you have a lot of.

We haven't fully decorated the playroom, yet. We have been choosing bright colors, kids art, and toys to decorate with. It freaks me out when you go into a house and you can't tell that kids live there or there are NO toys in the family room. That will never happen here. We choose to hang out as a family in the playroom. and LEGO is something that we all bond over so far.

Plus we're creative and impulsive and trying to take out all of this LEGO stored in a bedroom or closet somewhere to build something from the tip your imagination ruins the fun of it.

So far, we haven't gotten too messy but the boy is still young and is sticking to putting minifigures together and putting custom made weapons in their hands. I can't wait to see what is next!

We'll see how we do with the baby, once she starts getting around and putting things in her mouth. I promise to update if I have anything to share with THAT transition...

Here's what our little guy is playing with now... Our Simpson House! It should be locked away, but you all saw The LEGO Movie, right. We're determined not to go all Lord Business on this kid.

    1. Just looking at this room makes me want to come play though and it keeps them off the floor and away from accidents with toes.

  7. Lego organizing seems to be our weekly task since we tend to sit down on every Sunday trying to sort them out. And of course, on Monday, they're all again messed up. But it's a way to teach kids to clean up also.

  8. I have never seen so much Lego in one house, in my life!!! The only problem that I see is...if my nephew got to them, and dumped each drawer into one big pile! Then it would take hours to separate them all again into the appropriate drawer!!! LOL
