Crispy Pan Fried Breakfast Tofu

We've done a lot of breakfast posts on the blog but I finally had a chance to shoot some video of one of my kids' favorite breakfast foods to show you all a really simple way to cook tofu. It is cooked low and slow and crisps up in the frying pan and then toss with some tasty spices including nutrient rich nutritional yeast. It takes a little while to make but it makes a tasty protein rich little finger food and a great filler for an egg-like sandwich.

I don't press my tofu. I just drain it right out of the package, cut it and put it on the heated pan. The pan will cook off all the moisture.

Once they begin to dry out, I flip them over and cook on the other side. Then a quickly toss with a variety of spices. The kids like to eat these on their own.

Here is the fried tofu on a pretzel roll with spinach, mushrooms, onions, Chao cheese, and avocado...

Here is a breakfast bagel that contains a vegan sausage, a vegan bacon, a vegan cheese, onions, tomato and a tofu fried "egg".

Here is the video of how to make this easy tofu:

Here is the recipe. It is really just spiced to your taste and liking.

1 block tofu - firm or extra firm
Oil or oil spray
1 tsp nutritional yeast
pinch of turmeric
pinch of Kala Namak (black salt)
pinch of onion powder
pinch of paprika
Salt to taste
Pepper to taste

You simply drain the cold tofu, slice it down the middle then slice it in 1/4" sections so you have thin, bite sized pieces.

In a cast iron or nonstick skillet on low/med heat, add a splash or spritz of oil if you like. I like a little oil for a more robust flavor.

Cook until tofu appears to be drying out on top making sure it doesn't burn. This is a slow process but it works nicely for crisping it up. Flip and cook on other side.

For cast iron, you want a stainless spatula to scrape them up as they may be stuck a bit in the centers.

Once cooked, place tofu in a bowl and quickly add all the seasonings and spices to taste. Toss and serve.

Great for egg-like sandwiches or simple kids finger food.
