Pregnancy Nausea and Natural Ways to Ease the Queasiness

* If you click any of my links and make a purchase I may receive a commission.

Let's cut to the chase here, if you've made your way to this post, you are probably suffering with nausea during pregnancy. I suffered very badly during my second pregnancy. I compiled a quick punch list of what one can do to ease the queasiness.

Major Disclaimer - I am not a doctor or health professional. I'm a mom blogger who knows what has worked with myself in hopes they will help someone else get over morning sickness during pregnancy.

I ended up in tears many times because I felt so sick, and felt tremendous guilt for checking out of my fun family life. My doctor gave some suggestions but didn't prescribe medication because I wasn't vomiting. I tried everything I could to try to ease the queasiness.

Here is what worked for me:

Apparently, the Sea-Band Mama wristbands stimulate the P6 Nei Kuan pressure point in the wrist to remedy nausea and vomiting. They are made of a soft knit fabric in a pretty pink, so they are comfortable and attractive to wear.

Plus, the wristbands come in their own little clear plastic case. In my opinion, they are definitely worth a try if you are suffering.

HERE's MY LONG list of Natural Remedies for Morning Sickness.

*I am not a doctor or a medical professional. This list was compiled from a number of different sources, including herbs and foods that have been used for generations. Please consult your doctor for medical and health advice first.

1. Food, Drinks, and Pre-natal Vitamins

First off, we can start with the basics around food, water, and pre-natal vitamins. What you are eating and drinking and when you are doing may have an effect nausea. WebMD has a really great basic list of remedies for morning sickness we can start out with here:
  • Eat five or six small meals instead of three big ones to avoid having an empty stomach.
  • Take a multivitamin regularly. This may make morning sickness less severe. Don't take your vitamin on an empty stomach because it may worsen nausea.
  • Avoid smells that upset your stomach.
  • Eat saltine crackers, dry toast, or dry cereal before you get out of bed to calm your stomach.
  • Avoid spicy and fatty foods.
  • When you feel nauseous, eat bland foods that are easy to digest, like rice, bananas, chicken broth [we can veganize with vegetable broth], gelatin [there is a vegan Jello-like product but not sure if this is worth pursuing but you get the gist] or Popsicles.
  • Suck on ice or sip water, weak tea, or clear sodas when you feel nauseous.

2. Go vegan - A study in the University of Chicago Quarterly Review of Biology found that societies in which mothers experience morning sickness are more likely to consume animal products than those that primarily consumed plants and that because animal products may contain parasites and pathogens, morning sickness may be a way of expelling those toxins. They also found that the greatest aversions are to meats, fish, poultry, and eggs.

I actually became pregnant the very first week of going vegan but I had cheese cravings a few times until I had some pizza and felt very sick and bloated for a few days after. I have been vegan ever since! I wish I had gone vegan and had a healthier lifestyle prior to my pregnancies.

One of my favorite vegan food delivery services for pregnancy and meals for a new mom too:

3. Anti-Nausea Wrist Bands

These are my favorite natural remedy for morning sickness because they are worn instead of ingested or consumed and you can have them in addition to whatever else you do. Sea-Band Mama wristbands stimulate the P6 Nei Kuan pressure point in the wrist to remedy nausea and vomiting. I felt a difference right away when I wore them although in the long term, I was back to feeling nauseous.

My husband wore the original Sea-Bands on a cruise and worked like a charm for his seasickness too, however, if he took them off, even for one minute, he would get sick. He learned the hard way to shower with them on! They are made of a soft knit fabric in a pretty pink, so they are comfortable and attractive to wear.

You can get the Sea-band wristbands on Amazon

3. Ginger

There's evidence that ginger helps reduce nausea and vomiting in some pregnant women. There are many ways to consume this. Fresh ginger can be grated and you can pour hot water over it and drink this as a tea (you can use sugar or agave to sweeten it), eat it with food, or in smoothies. You can find dried ginger to snack on or take it in capsule form.

Dr. Greger from Nutritionfacts.org recommends 1 gram 1000 mg of powered ginger per day for morning sickness - about 1/2 tsp and no more that 4 g or 2 tsp of powdered ginger.
This translates to :
1 teaspoon (5g) of freshly grated ginger root
2 ml ginger extract
2 teaspoons (10ml) of ginger syrup
4 cups (237 ml each) of prepackaged ginger tea

These Ginger Capsules are vegan:

These Vegan Ginger Chews are made with real ginger:

There are many other chews, powders, and other plant based ways to get ginger if you find it works for your morning sickness. Check out a bunch of options on Amazon.

4. Natural Candies

Preggie Pops and Preggie Pop Drops are great especially if you are not crazy about ginger. These use USDA Organic natural ingredients which have been proven to decrease nausea.

I like that this Healthy Mama Morning Sickness Drops are USDA organic. You can also find them on Amazon!

5. Tea

Teas have been known to help with morning sickness and nausea. Some teas include raspberry leaf, peppermint, or anise tea.

Earth Mama Angel Baby has a nice Organic Morning Wellness Tea for Occasional Morning Sickness which was formulated by a Nurse and Herbalist for Earth Mama, this Organic Morning Wellness Tea is naturally vegan and gluten-free, GMO-free, caffeine free, safe for pregnancy, in easy to brew tea bags. It contains stomach settling organic Ginger Root and Spearmint, a safe hint of Peppermint, soothing Chamomile and Lemon Balm. It's also USDA Certified 100% Organic, Non-GMO Project Verified, and Certified Kosher.

6. Aromatherapy and Essential Oils

I know everyone is big on Essential Oils these days and there are a few that you can use as morning sickness remedies put into a diffuser. Some good oils to use include peppermint, mandarin, spearmint, Petitigrain, sweet orange, ginger, and lavender.

We liked this aromatherapy this pregnancy-safe, naturally uplifting, ginger citrus herbal aromatherapy spray from Earth Mama Angel Baby

7. Ginger Beer

Many people swear by ginger beer for treating nausea. There is actually a Ginger Beer Variety Pack on Amazon so you can try 6 different brands and see if they work for you.

8. More Natural Remedies for Morning Sickness

Here's some of the natural remedies we haven't covered yet from MindBodyGreen.com:
  • Get out of bed slowly.
  • Try to get a lot of rest! Being over tired makes morning sickness worse.
  • Go for a walk or enjoy some mild exercise to relieve hormonal activity.
  • Get plenty of fresh air.
  • Eat a protein-rich snack before bed.
  • Keep apple juice by the bed and sip thru the night. This will help keep blood sugar stable.
  • Suck on lemon drops.
  • Drink lemonade.
  • Suck on 1 drop of peppermint oil on a sugar cube. (Or drop the entire sugar/oil concoction into your tea.)
  • Drink brewer's yeast and tomato juice with lemon.
  • Get some brewer's yeast. It's high in B vitamins, and good sprinkled on grains such as brown rice.
  • Get acupuncture treatments.
  • Chew on fennel seeds.

9. Vegan Group Remedies for Morning Sickness:

  • Water, ginger beer, smoothies, or tea - the consensus was to stay well-hydrated
  •  Eat protein rich foods in the morning.
  • Essential oils - Frankincense, rose, or jasmin
  • B6 and Magnesium - speak to your doctor
  • Fruit - people reported snacking on things like cherries and grapes and cherries was my go-to snack for my first pregnancy, watermelon for my second.
  • CBD oil - this was mentioned quite a bit in some of my vegan groups so I went a little further in the next section with Dr. Greger's thoughts on Cannibis

10. Cannabis

Again, I want to reiterate that I'm not a doctor or health professional but I wanted to include this because it is important to talk about, especially with severe cases of hyperemesis gravidarum. With growing legalization we know that Cannabis was rated as effective in controlling nausea by 9 out of 10 people who used it but we ALSO know that it can be potentially harmful to the developing fetus. According to Dr. Greger, the benefits may outweigh the bad when dealing with severe symptoms of hyperemesis gravidarum:

One woman observed that during her second pregnancy, “I was throwing up first the acid in my stomach, which is yellow, then it’s orange because it’s the outer layer, and then you get to the green bile which is [from] your intestines. Then once you’re past that, you go straight blood.” Indeed, hyperemesis gravidarum can lead to such violent vomiting that you can rupture your esophagus, bleed into your eyes, go blind, or become comatose. So, there are certain circumstances in which cannabis could be a lifesaver for both the mother and the baby, as women with this condition sometimes understandably choose to terminate otherwise wanted pregnancies.
From https://nutritionfacts.org/2019/03/07/ginger-or-cannabis-for-morning-sickness/

I personally tried just a tiny bit of cannabis for my second pregnancy after a long bout with morning sickness and was shocked at how quickly and effectively it worked. I have several friends who also tried cannabis and it also relieved their nausea symptoms. All were normal, healthy pregnancies, and are normal, healthy kids, however, smoking or inhaling anything can be harmful which is why CBD is a better choice.
