Oatmeal, with chia seeds, banana, frozen strawberries, salt, maple syrup cooked in and topped with almond butter, pecans, raspberries and a strawberry heart.

I LOVE making oatmeal and I always make it with love. Oatmeal is one of my favorite breakfast foods because it has protein, iron, it's filling, healthy, and you can put so many foods and fruits with it.

My husband likes his plain, with a little maple syrup and sometimes I sneak in a little Chia. I put his fruit on the side (not touching of course). My son likes his the same but topped with a healthy serving of nut butter and a fruit or jelly heart of some sort.

I like mine with pretty much anything, but that is the great thing about making oatmeal is you can do whatever you like! I'm not going to give you any one recipe, just some of our favorite ingredients to add and change it up a bit.

Oatmeal, with cocao powder, cinnamon, maple syrup, and salt cookied in and topped with almond butter, banana, chocolate chips, and strawberry jelly.

First, you can use whichever different type of oatmeal you like. I prefer Bob's Red Mill Organic Oats Rolled Thick. They taste great, they're organic, and I can get them on Amazon Subscribe and Save. They take about 10 minutes to cook on the stove. I usually just cook them with water, but every now and then I use almond milk or soy milk, just depending on how I'm feeling.

Then, it really depends what kind of mood I'm in for me to decide whether or not to throw some things in the pot to cook along with the oatmeal or if I just want to top it with some additional foods.

I usually always add a little salt and a little maple syrup to my oatmeal when it is just about done on the stove. Most of the time I add cinnamon and chia seeds. Chia is great for added protein and nobody really complains about it in my house so in it goes!

I like my oatmeal on the thick side, but if you want it creamy, add more liquid. When I add different foods to cook in my oatmeal, I usually add more water, too.

Here's a chocolate and peanut butter lovers bowl...

  1. Love oatmeal, I don't know why people here in Portugal don't make it more often, I sure do. I love adding fresh fruit to it :) I also have a blog, it's in Portuguese but I would love you to visit! http://ocantinhomaria.blogspot.pt/
