Winter Garden and Weeeeeds

We just had a few good rains and now the front of our yard is exploding with California Poppies! A lot of folks in my neighborhood have replaced their front yard lawns with decomposed granite (dirt that looks like sand or desert) and they either put a binder in and have it tamped down to the point that weeds cannot grow.

We used pebble in our front yard hoping it would discourage the weeds because we liked the way it looked but there is no binder. Sooooo we still get weeds. Buuuut on the plus side, we can grow seeds, too! Last year we grew some poppies so this year, they have re-seeded and are coming in again. I'm really looking forward to them starting to bloom. It is going to be beautiful!

Right now, it just looks like weeds.

The boys got out for a little while the sun was still out to pull the weeds.

I would help, but my preggo belly says no.

The little guy loves to help!

They have to get the weeds out before they get big and re-seed themselves. We took an evening walk and there's a house a few doors down with a ton of weeds. I'll have to remember to thank them when they start re-seeding and blowing down the street to our place.

As usual we use NO chemicals, no poison, no pesticides, no herbicides. We keep it clean around here.

  2. Gardening is hard work, but is a rewarding task.

  3. I am so jealous! LOL I would much rather be weeding than dealing with ice and snow - brrr. Hurry up springtime in New Jersey!

  4. While you're picking weeds in California, we are shoveling endless mounds of snow here in Michigan! I do have to admit that I'm a bit jealous of you right now-even if the only gardening you are doing is weeding! :)

    1. And the weeds keep coming here while the snow keeps coming in your neck of the woods! I suppose I'll take the weeds, too. Hope it warms up soon for you guys!
