In this true to life story, Dion only had limited food and water supplies with him on this run through an unforgiving desert but he shares them with the Gobi. It is quite an adventure with some ups and downs but they stick together and form an incredible bond.
"Finding Gobi was one of the most difficult things I’ve ever done, but her finding me was one of the best things I’ve ever experienced,” says Dion, who on June 13th, 2017 released the adult trade paperback edition of Finding Gobi to rave reviews.
“Before we met, Gobi was on her own for an unknown period of time. We have no idea what she saw, experienced, felt, or even ate while she was in the desert,” he continues. “I think it’s an especially important thing for kids to remember, that we never know each other’s stories. We never know what our friend or our classmate, or even sometimes our family members are going through, which makes it even more important to always be kind to the people who come into our lives.”
Our Thoughts
My 2.5 and 5 year old really enjoyed this book. They loved the pictures and the story. I think they can relate because of the bond we have with our own rescue dog and our family's commitment to rescuing animals in need.
I enjoyed this book because it is a true story with nice illustrations of a warm relationship between an athlete and a scruffy little stray dog and how they encourage each other to keep going and triumph together despite seemingly insurmountable obstacles.
This book will inspire young animal lovers with a story filled with friendship, kindness, compassion and empathy. It shows that even in the middle of the desert, when you are busy doing something else really really important, kindness is possible.
